George Bills

George is going to live at sea. Casper David Friedrich painted monk by the sea in 1809. Friedrich was in search of God in his paintings without the religious iconography, finding it in nature. The act of living at sea is George’s way of being totally immersed in that that Friedrich was seeking; stripping the elements down to their basic forms. The sea is zero, the horizon is an illusion and the sky is infinity. Living within the endless void George is trying to create that solitude and independence from the rest of the world for a brief moment in time. For the viewer I am the contrast of scale; the earthly binding: I am the monk.
